Would his picture be in the horse trainer’s Hall Of Fame? His name was Jesse Beery. Before he was twenty he became a world class horse trainer. He was so well known, there were more people who heard of him than didn’t. Jesse Beery learned how to train horses almost entirely on his own because there were few people who knew how to train a horse. Beery’s first inclination to train horses happened when he drove a horse and buggy to a friend’s house. As he worked with his horse he discovered ways to get a horse to do what he wanted.

Beery’s methods solved numerous problems with horses that seemed unsolvable. As if his accomplishments weren’t enough to keep him busy, Beery wrote a Horse Training manual describing how to do what he did. Unfortunately, few copies exist today and those that do may be hard to read due to the poor condition of these very old books. Beery’s book may be available in used book stores if one is motivated to search. There may be an alternative. Beery’s book was recently revived by horse trainer Andy Curry.

The annual highlight of horse racing takes place every year during the months of May and June with what is known as the Triple Crown races which are held at three different race tracks. Eventually, Sir Barton faded completely from view and retired at the end of the 1920 season. He had only moderate success as a stud. The entire structure of thoroughbred racing is based on the differences in class between animals. In stakes races, for instance, apart from the penalties for prior wins, all entrants carry the same weight. In handicaps’ anyone who’s willing to pay the required fees and enters a horse can have the tracks handicapper assigns the weights for the race so as to ensure a real contest.

In allowance races the weights are assigned directly by the conditions of the race itself, not by the tracks handicapper. The animal with the best prior record in the recent races will carry the most weight with graduation’s down to the lightest weight to be carried by the horses of less impressive records. This is an absolutely essential part of the equipment of every handicapper who attempts to pick winners.
